Treating Colds and Flu the Natural Way
November 12, 2008
When you’re sick, it seems like there’s nothing you can do except wait it out. However there are many natural remedies to prevent coughs, colds and flu and all the other common ailments. These same remedies can also help get you over illnesses faster as they help build your immune system. So lets take a look at some of the best natural remedies.
Ginger is perhaps the most prized fighter when it comes to being sick. Ginger is loaded with several different kinds of anti-virals, and can help with nausea, so drink a cup of ginger tea a few times a day when sick. Vitamin C is an immune system booster, so load up on fresh oranges or their juice. Chamomile tea will also help you relax and get the rest you need, so try to work a cup or two into your day, especially at bedtime. Garlic has been used for centuries as a natural antiseptic and infection fighter, so adding some into your chicken soup is a good idea. Of course, the big gun in everyone’s arsenal is echinacea, which has been shown to reduce both the duration and severity of colds and flu. You can use this many different ways, but it appears to work best in tea form. The most important thing you can do is rest and try to have a positive attitude.
Healthy Homes Start With Healthy Foods
August 20, 2008
The first place to start for anyone interested in natural healing should be with what they shove into their bodies on a daily basis. Many of the foods we eat are no longer in a natural state.
The problem is that it is not particularly easy to eat food that is 100% natural. Even healthy foods such as fish come from fish farms instead of the wild, whilst beef cattle are often reared on grain instead of natural grass. Many vegetables are robbed of their fibre and nutrients before they ever get anywhere near your mouth, not to mention the ones that end up being unhealthy foods such as crisps.
So to make things simpler for you we have put together a few pointers as to what you should try to include in your weekly shop to keep you and your family healthy:
- Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables - try to eat between 5 and 9 portions each per day.
- Buy whole grains when purchasing products such as pasta, bread and cereal.
- For protein focus on fresh fish, poultry and lean meats. Eggs, nuts and seeds a
- re other good protein options.
- Drink plenty of water. Low fat milk, fruit juices and herbal teas are other good options.
- If you need to buy bulk then frozen foods are a good option as they are usually frozen straight from production so actually retain a lot of their nutrients
- Avoid high calorie snacks and cakes etc. Fresh fruit and nuts are a much better alternative. If you like an afternoon snack why not try a peanut butter sandwich. Or as a desert perhaps a fruit and peanut butter smoothy.
- Avoid processed lunch meats.
- Choose your food dressings carefully and always read the label. Dressings made with olive oil, canola oil or walnut oil are the best
This is by no means an exhaustive list but it’s a start to get you thinking in the right direction. A nutritional diet is a subject all on it’s own so if you are thirsty for more then why not try looking at some books at amazon.
