Modern Lifestyle and Insomnia

May 5, 2009

To lead a healthy and productive lifestyle, we need a good eight hours of sleep every night.  The problem is, with our modern way of life, comes our modern problems, one of this is insomnia.  This has become a big problem so that one-third of the world’s population is already suffering from insomnia. None the wonder is it that the sleep aid market continues to grow quickly.

Insomnia can be a couple of things, one is not being able to fall asleep at all, the other one is waking up prematurely during your sleep in the night.  Insomnia can be cured only by putting back your sleep in the proper hours.  Without doing so, you will lose productivity and focus on your supposed work hours during the day, which in these tough times, the consequences can be catastrophic.

There are many reasons why people fall victim to insomnia, as earlier mentioned, this can be blamed to man’s modern lifestyle.  Incapacity to deal with stress, results to depression, anxiety and other psychosomatic illnesses.  Insomnia can also be caused by medication, alcohol or caffeine.

If your insomnia is due to stress or anxiety, it may wise to talk to a psychologist at the earliest possible time to address the issues earlier on.  Until the issues are resolved, it may be very difficult for you to go back to your usual sleep cycle.  Finding the best way to de-stress periodically may help you deal and manage your stress better.

Avoid Stress by Working at Home

Sleepwalking or somnambulism is a sleep disorder. Normally, a person who suffers this condition engages in activities such as sitting, sweeping the floor and walking around the house while he is asleep. This is done with open eyes, with the person looking normal enough and even able to answer questions fairly well. Only, when asked the next day, he won’t remember anything.

Somnambulism is common among children ages 3-10 due to their highly active lifestyle, along with other sleeping disorders like night terror and sleep talking. On the other hand, adults can also experience this kind of sleeping disorder especially when they are under severe emotional and physical stress and anxiety. Sleepwalking is also found to be hereditary in some cases.

Some medications can also cause sleepwalking particularly those prescribed for seizures, anxiety, heart and allergies since it directly affects the nervous system. There is no known cure for sleepwalking though episodes can be prevented by meditation and avoidance of fatigue and stress. It is also best to make your house sleepwalker-friendly if there is one in the household - to avoid accidents from happening.
