Keeping the Family Free from Allergy

February 26, 2009

Apart from ensuring that the family has the basic needs in life such as food, shelter, clothing, and other necessities, it is important to keep everyone healthy and strong. This involves feeding the children the right food and preventing the possibility of disease. A disease that is becoming more common nowadays is allergy. Many children are now born with congenital allergies to food, dust, and other allergens. Allergy medicine have now become a staple in every home’s first aid kit.

Aside from having the right allergy medicine easily accessible to the family, prevention is still better than cure. That means making sure that the family’s environment is free from allergens, if not totally immune from such. Most physicians recommend that the home be free from allergens. Here are tips that would assist in keeping the home allergy-free.

  1. Avoid pets that shed. A major allergen that remain unnoticed in homes are fur from pets. Domestic animals, especially dogs and cats, shed their fur on a daily basis. These are allergens that can aggravate different types of allergies, usually those related to the respiratory system. Cat hair is known to induce asthma and rhinitis.
  2. Sanitize your home. Other allergies stem from dust and particles. When cleaning the house, make sure you use a vacuum cleaner that will efficiently get rid of dusts and other dirt. After using a vacuum, it is also advisable to sanitize the living areas with home cleaners that will also kill bacteria and other germs.
  3. Furnishings should be moisture-free. Furnishings that can accumulate moisture should be cleaned regularly, if not avoided entirely. Carpets can gather moisture which, in turn, become breeding grounds for fungi and bacteria. Beds should also be sanitized to make sure it is free from dust mites.

These preventive measures, though not fool-proof, can minimize allergic reactions. If all else fails, just make sure you have the necessary medicine that can provide allergy relief.

A Child’s Love For A Family Pet

February 23, 2009

Part of great memories of growing up is having your own pet. When you have a toddler in your house, sooner or later, they will ask for a pet of their own - it’s usually just a part of growing up. Pets - especially dogs - are meant for companionship and provide security for all. Our primary role, as parents, is to help a child choose the right pet for them.

With pet handling, you must teach them how to interact with their pets. That includes how to play with their pets and teach your kids not to upset their pets. Remember that these animals do fight back when they are bothered so it is best to acquire some useful information regarding your pet’s behavior and how to care for them.

If the pet is in close interaction with your child, you should keep your pet clean all the time to avoid endangering your child from diseases. Also, encourage your child to wash hands after handling pets. Disinfect all nooks and crannies of your pet’s home by removing waste immediately and cleaning its house regularly.

Dietary Tips to Boost Energy

February 20, 2009

If you find yourself too tired to wake up in the morning and you have to literally drag yourself out of bed, then you are lacking dietary energy to keep up with the demands of your daily life. This is not uncommon in today’s high pressured society. Stimulants like coffee and chocolates provide a short-term remedy but these kinds of food are not a long term solution.

It is very important not to skip breakfast since it is the most important meal of the day. Foods that are rich in carbohydrates, protein and dietary fat will add energy to your daily routine. If you are an active person, you won’t have a problem burning this energy throughout the day. These kinds of food are considered fuel for your body. You should still remember though to take everything in moderation to avoid side effects of over eating.

When it comes to energy boost, healthy snacking is highly recommended to keep you energized. Your best bet is trail mixes, fruits and vegetables. Also, avoid eating foods that are fatty or fried because it tends to make you feel sluggish. Lastly, by taking multivitamin supplements daily, you keep your body’s energy at its peak always.

Avoid Stress by Working at Home

February 18, 2009

Sleepwalking or somnambulism is a sleep disorder. Normally, a person who suffers this condition engages in activities such as sitting, sweeping the floor and walking around the house while he is asleep. This is done with open eyes, with the person looking normal enough and even able to answer questions fairly well. Only, when asked the next day, he won’t remember anything.

Somnambulism is common among children ages 3-10 due to their highly active lifestyle, along with other sleeping disorders like night terror and sleep talking. On the other hand, adults can also experience this kind of sleeping disorder especially when they are under severe emotional and physical stress and anxiety. Sleepwalking is also found to be hereditary in some cases.

Some medications can also cause sleepwalking particularly those prescribed for seizures, anxiety, heart and allergies since it directly affects the nervous system. There is no known cure for sleepwalking though episodes can be prevented by meditation and avoidance of fatigue and stress. It is also best to make your house sleepwalker-friendly if there is one in the household - to avoid accidents from happening.

Family Effects of Infidelity

February 15, 2009

When a man commits adultery there is usually an instant feeling of outrage. After the shock calms down and we are left to our own devices, we look back and try to find answers for this behavior. What’s really disturbing is that infidelity can occur even in the happiest of marriages.

Marital relationships are most vulnerable with marital problems such as lack of communication, the feeling of being trapped into the relationship and pressures of parenthood. Often we are told that good communication is the basis of lasting relationship so when we reach the point that we don’t talk anymore, that’s the time to either exert some effort in saving the marriage or walk away from it.

Other times, the feeling of not being satisfied by partners may be an issue. The partner who performed the act of infidelity just wants to break the familiarity that has developed between the husband and wife. A willing third party provides convenience to do the act with.

The worst thing about a parent committing infidelity is if there are children which it might effect. Not only is a bad example being set, often times the children blame themselves. Whatever the circumstances it is a situation with no easy answer.

Lose Weight With a Healthy Diet

February 12, 2009

With the ever widening range of diets available to us, they become too complicated to digest (pardon the pun) and most of the time, we end up using a combination of different kinds of diet. Often this can be unhealthy and, in some cases will lead to health problems. It could be argued that you’re better off just trying to eat healthily and, if you feel it necessary, you can always supplement your efforts using weight loss programs.

Crash diets are the unhealthiest of them all since you deprive your body of the nourishment it needs. Instead take small meals all throughout the day to maintain food for your body to burn. Same goes for skipping meals, it will only make your body crave for more food.

Don’t be fooled by low-fat food and beverages. Low-fat doesn’t necessarily mean low calorie too so while you are sipping your ‘healthy’ drink you may want to consider the calorie count. An important part of dieting is to maintain hydration - so why not just stick to water anyway. Depravation often produces results as a result of dehydration - that’s why you put weight back on so quickly once you start to retain water again. A healthy diet is best paired with exercise and realistic goals.

Common Health Problems for Men

February 9, 2009

Have you ever wondered why there seems to be more old ladies than old gents? It is probably because men don’t live long enough to reach their golden age hence the 3:1 ratio of women to men. Right from birth, women are deemed healthier than men. This may be due to the fact that girls are more in-tuned with their bodies and men just don’t care as much, as long as they are functioning. Suddenly that changes if they aren’t functioning - especially in the sexual department :-). Don’t worry boys if that’s you then just get yourself a bottle of Ikawe herbal erectile and sexual enhancement supplement.

Cardiovascular disease is man’s number one nemesis. This disease is developed when cholesterol plaque blocks the arteries of the heart and brain causing heart attack or stroke. Lung cancer can become a problem for smokers - so you know what to do now then don’t you!

The aforementioned Erectile dysfunction is traumatic for obvious reasons and, in many cases, is actually considered a caution for cardiovascular diseases. It is often a symptom of poor blood circulation and related ailments. There are plenty of herbal treatments for erectile dysfunction available but just make sure it isn’t a sign of other impending problems. And while we’re down there, a digital rectal examination is highly advised for men to keep track of their prostate’s current health status.

Bust Germs & Keep a Healthy Home

February 7, 2009

As parents, we are very protective of our kids. As much as possible, we wouldn’t want our kids catching a nasty cold and have them in discomfort even for a day. With this in mind, we prevent them from touching things that we highly suspects of bacteria and germs. That is only natural for us but the problem is, we may be looking too far out to ever consider that the enemy might be right under our noses.

Most of the time, we overlook things and places around the house since we believe our homes are clean. For example, the kitchen sponge is the common breeding ground for Salmonella and Campylobacter. Same goes for the faucet handles - especially those in the bathroom - they pose as a great catcher of germs.

Do you know that even your innocent-looking shower curtain is on this list? It is home for Sphingomonas and Methylobacterium posing a great risk for individuals with immune deficiency problems. It is also best to examine your bed at this point, especially if you have allergic rhinitis. The real danger behind bacteria and germs is that they viewable to the naked eye - instinctively this tends to instil the attitude of ‘what we can’t see can’t hurt us’. If only that were the case. Stay alert.
