Measure of Bone Density For Diagnosing Osteoporosis

September 25, 2009

Bone mass density measurement has become a standard procedure for diagnosing osteoporosis.  Earlier, osteoporosis was a disease detected only when an individual suffered from low impact or low trauma fracture.  Around this time, the bones had already weakened and the individual was destined to lead a life of frailty.

After going through several years of evolution, the current Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) machine was made available to osteoporosis patients in 1989, replacing earlier requirement for nuclear medicine. In 1995, the FDA approved new type of DEXA machine. Individuals measuring between one and 2.5 in first time screenings require DEXA of their hip or spine, as these areas are at higher risk and preferred site for diagnosing osteoporosis. The tests usually take five to 10 minutes to complete.

Though peripheral devices found in pharmacies to check bone density are less expensive, they aren’t without limitations. However, the physician may wish to have bone density of heel, finger or even forearm to screen for osteoporosis and recommend a central scan of the hip or spine if the peripheral test emerges positive.

How is Osteoporosis Treated Through Prescription Medications

September 21, 2009

Osteoporosis treatment starts young through specific preventive measures. Right calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K2, magnesium and weight bearing exercise in teenage years helps increase bone mass density between 25 and 35 years. Nevertheless, the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) have several available treatment options with low side effects. Several drugs have come up in the markets that help in treating osteoporosis.

One amongst them is Forteo – the first such treatment used to stimulate new bone growth. It works by regulating calcium and phosphate amounts in bones. In the mid-1990s, the FDA approved non-hormonal osteoporosis treatment called alendronate, marketed as Fosamax. It slows bone thinning process. Another drug used for osteoporosis is selective estrogen receptor modulator, which allows the medication to act on certain tissues such as estrogen. Yet another medication that improves calcium use to build new bone tissue is Calcitonin. Using estrogen with biphosphonates is also believed to show good results.

Most important is the integration of calcium, vitamin D and vitamin K2 in the treatment plan for anyone suffering from osteoporosis.  These vitamins and minerals are necessary for the body to slow down the decrease in bone mass density.

Can One Lose Weight With Weight Loss Supplements?

September 16, 2009

Nearly 66 % of adults and 15 % of teenagers in America have obesity related problems. The urge to lose weight fast and the inability to change eating habits has further increased the demand for weight loss supplements. Weight loss supplements are divided into two categories - over the counter and prescription.  While prescription supplements are FDA regulated, over-the-counter aren’t. The latter also causes side effects, but their reaction in people is yet to be thoroughly researched.

The two prominent over-the-counter supplements are Ephedra and Hoodia Gordonii. Though Ephedra is highly effective, it causes severe side effects such as blood pressure, cardiac problems and even death. Another supplement that shows promising results is Hoodia Gordonii. However, very few manufacturers guarantee its quality and authenticity and it is also known to cause side effects in liver.

Weight loss supplements work effectively only when they are used with dietary changes. Otherwise, chances of you regaining even more weight are high. It is a highly important tool in the battle of the bulge, provided that you utilize it properly and with care.

Various Options To Treat Cellulite

September 14, 2009

Cellulite is an unsightly jiggling, dimpled flesh found on upper thighs, stomachs, upper arms and buttocks of women as they age. A study recently conducted by a leading cosmetic brand states that 70% women have cellulite, while other physicians believe the number to be as high as 90 %. There are limited treatment options available. It is claimed that exercise helps build muscles in affected areas, masking cellulite and enhancing circulation. Additionally, a healthy diet prevents cellulite through appropriate weight maintenance. However, they can’t reduce the cellulite already appeared on the skin.

Some of the newer anti cellulite treatment options include cold-laser massage, Vela smooth, Synergie, Fat-Melting injections, Liposuction, Fatburners and Skin Firmers. Most typical ointments only attack the skin and not the source. The effect is temporary and wears off when the cream is discontinued.

Other anti-cellulite treatment options include anti-cellulite creams and coffee grounds. Here too, the effects are temporary. Another anti-cellulite treatment option is Mesotherapy, in which a solution of amino acids, vitamins and homeopathic medications are injected under the skin to break down fat cells. Select those depending on your skin condition and budget.

Has Hoodia Diet Been Effective in Losing Weight?

September 10, 2009

Hoodia is an out-of-age weight loss supplement, relatively new to North America than other weight loss supplements. It was discovered in 1937 by a Dutch anthropologist, who found African Bushmen using the plant to suppress their appetite, while traveling across the desert.

Following extensive research, British pharmacists successfully isolated the active ingredient P-57 from the plant in 1995. This P-57 works on the central nervous system making the body feel that the stomach is full, causing weight loss. People with diabetes need to be careful while using the supplement as it tricks the body to believe that there is sufficient sugar in blood, whereas there isn’t. Dangerously low blood sugar drops in these patients often leads to death.

As with other herbal supplements, Hoodia has to be taken with caution. Certain substances in it can cause liver dysfunction and damage. Typical side effects aren’t well documented as there aren’t any reliable studies concerning humans’ right from the time it was introduced in North America. Though Hoodia Gordonii has been shown to be effective in weight loss supplementation, studies are yet to be carried out with respect to safety. The choice is yours.

Effective Diagnosis and Modes of Treatment of Oral Cancer

September 8, 2009

Incidences of oral cancer are highest amongst tobacco users and alcoholics. An oral cancer treatment is a multidisciplinary approach, meaning that the efforts of surgeons, radiologists, chemotherapy oncologist, dental practitioners, nutritionists and rehabilitation and restorative specialists need to come together for effective treatment.

Actual treatment modalities include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy based on age, overall health and medical history. Surgical technique involves primary tumor resection, in which the surgeon removes the entire tumor and part of surrounding tissues. If the cancer invades the bone, then removing part or all of jawbone is very essential.

Yet another treatment option is radiation therapy, in which the radiologist focuses high energy x-rays to damage cancer cells. It is aimed at those areas where cancer is present. Side effects include sores, tissue destruction and significant pain during eating. Chemotherapy involves medications designed to kill cancer cells. It interferes with cancer cells halting its growth. It is often used in conjunction with radiation and surgery. Your doctor may refer you to a specialist such as oral and maxillofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists, medical oncologists, plastic surgeons, dentist, speech pathologist, mental health counselor and nutritionist for advanced treatment.

How to Add Fitness to Your Weight-Loss Routine?

September 4, 2009

Statistics show that the number of obese individuals has increased alarmingly. Using healthy weight loss plan to achieve negative calorie balance requires fitness and healthy diet. Fitness also increases flexibility and strength, so more people can perform their daily routine without discomfort.

The goal in any fitness program is to do moderate exercise and also maintain the same intensity level for 45 minutes to an hour and a half. The time taken (duration) for exercise depends on the individual’s lifestyle, overall health, the weight required to lose and the individual’s personal motivation factor. Individuals who are moderate to severely overweight should use low-impact aerobic activities to decrease potential damage to their joints. Such activities include swimming, running, rolling and walking.  These are great exercises that not only increase heart rate, but also prevent joint damage.

Besides exercise, maintaining a diet of green leafy vegetables, fruits and salads also helps decrease weight. Consume citrus fruit juices on a daily basis.  By implementing these programs in your daily schedule, you are sure to lose the excess baggage!!!

Symtoms of Larynx Cancer and Its Treatment Methods

September 2, 2009

Also called voice box, the larynx is a 2 inch long organ situated in the neck. It is used to breathe, talk or swallow and its walls are made of cartilage. The large cartilage that forms the front of voice box protrudes in men and is known as Adams Apple. Symptoms of larynx cancer depend on the size and location of tumor in voice box. Most cancers start from the vocal cords and not in the cartilage that forms the walls of voice box.

While these tumors are seldom painful, they almost always cause hoarseness or other changes in voice quality. Some patients receive lumps in their throat or have a sore throat or earache. Tumors developing below vocal cord are extremely rare and cause breathing difficulties. Some tumors also cause bad breath that doesn’t go with mouth wash and brushing as the source of the odor doesn’t come from mouth.

Treatment for laryngeal cancer starts with tumor diagnosis and, that too, in stages. Generally, the treatment first focuses on radiation to destroy cancer cells. Radiation is often used for small tumors. Chemotherapy and surgical removal are the other two treatment options.
