Billions are spent each year on over-the-counter cough and cold medications.  With such staggering costs, discovering ways in which you can help prevent coughs and cold and boost immune systems, certainly would benefit you and your family.

Statistically speaking, the elderly get fewer colds per year, having approximately one cold per year.  Adults get between two and five colds per year.  Children are the most afflicted by coughs and colds, coming down with five to ten colds per year.  It is believed that as we age, our body’s acquire immunities against colds, which would account for the different number of afflictions between the different age groups.

While we can’t put our children in bubbles to go through the cold and flu season, there are steps that you can take to help prevent child coughs and colds.  The old adage – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, is certainly true when it comes to preventing coughs and colds.  Lowering your risks will go a long way in benefiting you as well as your family.

I am sure you have heard your parents or grandparents talking up the wonders of chicken soup.  A Nebraska Medical Centre lung specialist recently discovered that chicken soup decreased inflammation, in a test tube.  Since colds, coughs, and the flu, are respiratory illnesses, it would make sense then that Chicken soup would be a good thing.

Foods containing high vitamin C, such as fresh oranges and grapefruit can also help prevent coughs and colds.  Whole grains, which contain vitamins and minerals, vitamin E, as well as zinc, will help boost your immune system.  Black tea helps speed up the action of the little hair cells inside your nose, which helps get expel germs.  Garlic is one of the best disease fighting foods.  Having two servings of garlic a day will definitely help you prevent coughs and colds.

Regular exercise also helps build your immune system.  Moderate exercise, such as walking for thirty minutes, several times a week, will help boost your immune system.  Strenuous exercising can work the opposite way, and will increase your chances of catching a cold.

Other important tips include, teaching your children to always cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing.  Wash your hands several times each day, washing them twice each time.  Carry a bottle of sanitizer with you and use it.  Do not rub your eyes with your fingers, instead use your knuckle, which is less likely to have cold germs on it.  Nuke your toothbrush in the microwave for 10 seconds before using it.  Turn your blow dryer on warm and breathe in the air for fifteen to twenty minutes.  Breathing in heated air will help prevent coughs and colds.

With the season for colds and coughs, fast upon us, now is the time to take steps to prevent coughs and colds.  Eat right, exercise regularly but mildly, and follow the prevention tips given above, and you will lower your risks while being vigilant in your steps to prevent coughs and colds.  For adults you may also may want to take a look at the new immune system support craze and buy some Activated Cellular Liquid Zeolite, commonly described as the most important supplement you will ever take. If that doesn’t super-charge your immune system nothing will.
