Slimming Down Your Weight Problem
November 17, 2008
There is more to having a weight problem than just a bit of excess and ungainly looking fat. There are a whole host of associated health problems to consider and these, added to the rapid rise in obesity, is putting a massive strain on the health service as well.
Over 8 million people in the UK are now clinically obese - that’s to say that they are 20% or more over their ideal weight. This excess weight puts undue stress on your back, legs, joints, circulation and internal organs - increasing your risk of just about any injury or illness you can think of. Obesity increases the body’s vulnerability to infection, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, stroke, and other serious health problems that can result in an early death.
So how do you know if you need to lose weight? The Body Mass Indexed (BMI) is the most widely recognised and easy to use method of measuring weight. The normal range for BMI is 20-25, with between 25 and 30 considered overweight, over 30 being slightly obese and over 40 being very obese.
To calculate your BMI get your height in centimetres and your weight in kilograms. Now lets say you are 186cm and weigh 84kg. Your BMI would be:
84 / (1.86×1.86) = 24.28
So a BMI of 24 is not too bad. However lets now say that you shrink by 30 cm overnight but still weigh 84kg. Your BMI is now:
84 / (1.56×1.56) = 34.52
You are now obese! So what can you do to lose weight effectively?
Well there are basically 3 methods you can use to lose weight - alter your diet, start up an exercise program, or use herbal weight loss supplements such as Trim24Seven weight loss patches. Ultimately you may decide to do all three which obviously gives you the best chance of losing weight fast - however is it effective?
Before you start on a ‘crash diet’ consider this - most diets fail simply because of what they represent. It’s probably you don’t classify your weight loss activities as a diet at all - it’s more a choice to live healthier in the long term. There are literally thousands of diets out there and many of them can have amazing results - the only problem is that in the long term they don’t really work.
So why do diets so often fail? Well lets take your typical calorie counting diet. Lets say for the sake of argument that you are on a diet trying to survive on just 1000 calories per day. Most people can easily burn off 1000 calories per day so on the face of it it is bound to work. The problem is if you are restricting yourself like this you are depriving your body and mind of much needed fuel. Your brain will begin to crave more glucose and eventually you will start eating sugary foods.
Meanwhile, as you’re fasting on your 1000 calorie diet your body is beginning to shut down as it tries to protect itself from famine. Your metabolic rate will slow down as your body looks to preserve energy. The result? As soon as you start eating normally again your body isn’t working efficiently and you end up piling the weight back on double time - often ending up heavier than you started. Starving yourself isn’t the answer - sensible eating and exercise is.
